Sonic the Hedgehog celebrates his 25th anniversary today - it was on this day in 1991 that Sega officially brought the speedy blue hedgehog to the world of videogames, and nothing has ever been the same ever since. And in the intervening years, Sonic has gone through a lot - cartoons, impossibly awful fan art, great games, terrible games, even MORE terrible games - but he still holds a special place in all of our hearts, at least for those original 90s games.

But again, Sonic has fallen on hard times recently - the Sonic Boom relaunch of the series failed to pick up much steam, Sega's fortunes have been on the decline, and the Sonic brand is still mostly defined to people these days as creepy fan art and unplayable games.

Even still, it came as something of a shock to people when the official, verified Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account went from your standard, brand-friendly social media presence to...well, this:



In mid-2015, Sonic's official Twitter account was handed over to someone with an actual sense of humor (check out The Verge for an excellent interview with that person), and apparently no oversight from the corporate overlords. And the result was lots of self-deprecation, memes, and maybe the best brand Twitter account of all-time.
