House of Wax, Child's Play, Annabelle, I, Robot: what do all these movies have in common?
They play on the fear of inanimate figures designed to represent humans, whether it's the eternally smiling dummy of a ventriloquist or an anthropomorphized Chuck-E-Cheese animatronic. But why do we find them so unnerving?
Is it the dead stare of a porcelain-faced doll as it looks straight through you, all the while fearing that it's gaze might shift to meet your own?
Is it the uncanny resemblance of a wax figure that looks real enough to breathe, and yet it's glossy skin remains silently in place?
Or maybe, it's the creeping feeling that one of these humanoid replicas will gain sentience and begin to stalk you from the dark corners of your room while you sleep.
Whatever your fear might be, wax figures, humanoid robots, mannequins, we can all agree on one thing: they're creepy as hell no matter how you feel about them.
Oh hell no.
